Coaching a Pitcher After an HBP: Rebuilding Confidence & Focus
Question
I coach a Little League team in their first year of kid pitch and I'm wondering what to tell a pitcher after he hits a batter.
How do get a pitcher to recover and refocus after an errant throw?
Answer
Hey Dave,
Just let him know that occasionally one "Gets Away" and that, it's part of the game.. Tell him it only hurts for a short while and even becomes an advantage to the pitcher.
Be sure he doesn't slow his pitches down because of fear of hitting a batter or he can never become a successful pitcher in the league..
He needs to put it behind him and move on.
The same goes for an errant throw. He needs to just move on.. He'll snap out of it in a few minutes..
