Getting Cut from the High School baseball team

Question
Hi, I have a 15-year old son and just read another story on your site similar to ours.  We just moved into town.  Our son has played baseball since the age of four.  He has always been considered at the top regarding his playing ability.  He has been selected for special teams and even went to State when he was eleven in Little League.  Now.. since we have moved the competition seems very overwhelming for him.  To begin with he is a young Sophomore so the odds are against him to begin with.  The state that we moved to is highly competitive and the schools are 6A Schools.  They basically start their baseball teams from the 8th grade on and there is basically year round practice.  My son was told in August that he could work out with the team but he would have to try out in January to get picked.  My husband and I invested hundreds of dollars on private lessons and our sons coach was the JV coach of the school. Right before Christmas break my son was told he was cut from the team because his batting was not up to par.  The coach told him that there would be no tryouts and he could tryout again in May.  My son was devastated and so are we.  I am depressed and very sad about this.  For one, we were told there would be a tryout and number two nobody even contacted us to let us know they changed the plan so we don't really know what happened and we don't know what to do.  This just isn't fair and now my son doesn't want to play baseball any longer because he is so down.  Christmas was a disaster and my son was acting out because of his enormous feeling of rejection.  My question to you is:  What should we do as parents in order to help him not to give up?  He is a really good player with a lot of heart and potential. And should we have a talk with the AD or should we just let it go?  We have been told that parent involvement and complaining makes it worse for the player.  We just feel this situation is extremely unfair and political.   Any suggestions to you would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Sorry to hear of your story which is not uncommon.I'm sure you know by now that what is considered good in one place is not good in another. If I were you as a parent I would have my son go and talk to the coach and see exactly what he needs to do to make the team next year.I have two kids that I am working with at this time that are in the same boat. One is even the same age.I always say if the kid quits playing then the coach was right to to cut him.He has to make a choice to try harder or just give up.Has he began to lift weightS? Some times kids are just not strong enough to swing the bat properly and no matter how much training he gets his improvement will not show.If it is his batting try a different instructor.I would not go to the AD.I would however meet with the coach to find out how he can cut a kid from the baseball class and not let him go work on his game and tryout again before baseball is starting.I am sure they have to have some kind of tryout before the season starts?
