1st Base positioning

Question
I was wondering if you could clarify where the first baseman should be playing when there is no outs,1, and 2 outs. I know if there is a runner on 3rd or 2nd and 3rd you should play in if less than two outs. I know about holding runners on and when there is two outs about playing normal. What about with no outs or 1 out should the first baseman play in if noone is on in case of a bunt? The same question if there is a runner on second no outs or 1 out do you play in for the bunt? thanks!

Answer
Benny,

With no runners on base (no matter how may outs) or if there is 2 outs play deep to give yourself some range to field ground balls.  If a runner is on third with less than two outs you should play in to get the out at home unless the run doesn't matter depending on the score. If a runner is at second base i would say to play half way (enough to give yourself range but enough to possibly throw the runner out at third base.  Only play in if there is a bunting situation or a threat to bunt.  I hope this answers your questions.

Thank You,
John Priest
