baseball throw speed

Question
Hi, I am a male aged 16 and weigh 140 lbs. I just had a quick question to ask you regarding my throwing speed. I can only throw a baseball at 38 mph(clocked by radar) at max effort. Is that average or below average for my age? What percentile? If it is well below average please give me suggestions to increase my throwing speed.

Answer
Rolly,

I would say if you look into averages you are below average for your age with a max throw of 38mph.  I am not sure what percentile you are in but I am assuming its near the bottom, sorry if thats not the news you are looking for.  Never focus on speed if you are a pitcher, you need to make outs no matter which way you get them.  If you are a position player you need to make plays and make outs no matter which way you get them.  The first thing to do in order to increase throwing speed is to perfect your mechanics. Once the mechanics are perfect you can start working on the strength.  Check out the following web site for a detailed explanation of the drills you need to do. http://www.thecompletepitcher.com/pitching_drills.htm  I like referring this web site because it has pictures along with explanations so it is easier to understand.
Good luck,

I also started a blog the other day for baseball instruction, here is the link,
