infield hits first base fielding

Question
SITUATION, RUNNER ON FIRST ,BALL HIT ABOUT 14 FEET OFF THE BAG AT FIRST. THE FIRST BASEMAN FIELDS BALL SOUNDLY,WANTS TO TAKE OUT THE LEAD RUNNER OR POSSABLY TURN 2 HE THROWS THE BALL TO THE SHORT STOP THAT IS COVERING SECOND BASE AND THE SECOND BASSMAN THROWS THE BALL BACK TO FIRST TO GET THE BATTER OUT. WHO COVERS FIRST IS IT THE SECOND BASEMAN OR THE PITCHER? IN MY OPPINON SECOND BASSMAN SHOULD COVER FIRST, NOT PITCHER

Answer
Under that scenario, both the 2nd baseman & the pitcher should be moving in the direction of first base when the ball was hit. Most of the time, the 2nd baseman will cover 1st, unless the first baseman is near enough to the bag to cover it himself. However -- the pitcher should be nearby to back up the throw, or in the event the 2nd baseman can't get there (for instance, if the baserunner was stealing when the ball was hit, he may have been moving towards 2nd to cover the steal and can't get back to 1st base on time).
