coaching

Question
how do i people become college and pro coaches even bench coaches?what is
the process?

Answer
Tex,

There are many different ways to become a coach at the higher level. Most coaches at some point started out as players.  Eventually they decided to go into coaching. Most college or professional coaches coached at the high school level, then worked their way up to assistant coaches in college, and if proven good enough, will eventually get a shot at being the head coach of a college team. Keep in mind there are 3 divisions of college basketball, Division 1 being the highest level. Most head coaches spend many years assisting before they are given an opportunity to coach at the head position. I would say that more than 90% of the head coaches in the NBA were at one point an NBA player themselves. It's very easy for most NBA players to transition into coaching if that's what they want to do. The NBA is great at hiring from within as they should. However, there are some college coaches that have entered the NBA and never played professional basketball. Coach K from Duke is one prime example of a Division 1 College coach that has been heavily recruited by NBA teams and has never played in the NBA. Your success and advancement as a coach depends greatly on your coaching ability, who you know and network with, patients, and a little bit of luck never hurts. If you have never coached before, I would start off by coaching a youth team, and gradually working your way up. Coaching is a very tough but rewarding job. Good Luck with it.
