Cracking zone defense!

Question
Hey man,
I just saw your profile and firstly i want to congatulate you for what you have done in just 18 years of life! Just extrordinary.

I want to ask you about how to crack the powerful zone defence. I have a basketball under 15 team and we play THE GAME of the season agianst our arch rivals. They play the 2-3 zone defence. Please help me and my team. How to "crack" this kind of defence? Just show me a couple of offence plays and give me some advice.

Thanks in advance man!

Answer
Hey thanks for your praise.

Look the 2-3 zone defence is not the perfect defence. Your problem is not insoluble, so first of all don't be upset, cause i can see you are a bit.
Here are 2 offense plays that beat the zone defence

A)Power or small forward cutting under the basket while center is making the shot, or quite the reverse, is one of the most successful plays against zone defence. Pass the ball to the center in the mid of the key. When the tall player is trying to hit the basket, almost always both defensive players of the back line try to disturb or block his shot and there's a free player cutting under the basket all alone. If center passes the ball, the other player can easily make the shot. This play is also known as "High-low". He can also pass the ball outside to a good shooter in the corner, for an open 3-pointer.

B) The other one is called Wheel Pattern or Motion. It's constant motion and fast passing will definately crack the zone defense. Your team is set in a rough circle. Point guard at the top, center in the low post zone and the remaining in the wings. It's about penetrating and passing.
Driving and splitting the ball or finishing when possible.
Point guard is driving and passing the ball outside. He's moving out of key to free room for the receiver and cutting to the other side, while everyone is moving up a place to replace the free court and the pass receiver is doing the same thing all the way round.
Always move to the free court. Don't stick in a spot. Usually this play ends up with a drive and all the way to an easy lay-up or a pass to an open shot.

Try also all below in your training.

1) Zone defence is run when they want to deal with penetrations and inside scoring. But it's week when the team is shooting 3-pointers. There is always an open man after a couple of fast passes. Encourage your players to try these shots in training. Practice shooting 3-pointers.

2)Fast passing among your quards will make the zone defence literally crack and free your power forward and center for an easier shot.

3)The start of the game is everything. If you have a good start against zone defense with these plays, don't get surprised if you see your opponents turning their defense into man-to-man. This will be quite discouraging for them and will enable you to be the boss, since you will be able to play as you usually do.

Hope i've helped!
Let me know if you won. OK
Thanks, Bob
