foul shooting rules

Question
I recently argued with a referee that an opposing player was not allowed to talk to one of my players while he was
attempting his foul shot. The referee told me there was no
such rule. Is there any way to find the NCAA rule regarding
foul shooting? Thanks.

Answer
Hi Ross,

You are correct and the referee who told you there is no rule is wrong. In the Men's and Women's Rules and Interpretations under Rule 9 page BR-125 Violations and Penalties it clearly states no opponent shall disconcert (e.g., taunt, bait, gesture, or delay) the free thrower. I would say talking to your player while shooting a free throw is taunting.

I think the referee only read rule 8 on free throws which doesn't discuss violations and penalties.

Here is the link to the rule book. just copy and paste it in your address bar.
