managing

Question
I'm in college, a small  D-III school. I have been been playing  (women's)basketball for most of my life, but I have opted out of playing this year for various reasons. However, I stil decided to stay involved by being hired as the manager. We did not have a manager last year, and  I really don't know what their duties entail. I have been searching all over for information  about managing a bball team at the college level, but I can't seem to find anything. Could you give me an idea of some of the duties I will/should have in a prompt manner? Thanks! : )

Answer
Hi Mel,

I coached college ball for 10 years and was very fortunate to have some great team managers. I think the reason I was so lucky to have great managers is I expected the same from a manager as I did from an assistant coach except for recruiting duties. I would never ask a manager to do something myself or an assistant coach hasn抰 already done before.

That being said a team managers duties can be filming games, taking stats, preparing the gym for practice, helping with practice, handling game and practice gear, and basically anything to help with the day to day operations of running a basketball team.

A manager is not someone who should be disrespected by the players, coaches, or anybody else associated with the basketball team.

I hope this helps and if you need anything else please write back. Good luck with the team and season!
