Drilling Layouts

Question
I have a relatively low track and good ball speed.  My PAP is about 4 inches over and 1/2 inch down.  Standard layouts on highend balls just aren't working for me.  I just can't get the balls to read the lane early enough when there's any volume of oil while others with much less hand can fairly easily.  I'm a high level bowler too who knows how to play the lanes with ease, so it's not just a drop the speed and come off the back of the ball issue.  I need a layout where I can be aggressive and get the ball working.  I'm thinking perhaps that I may have to place the pin below the midline for the heavier patterns, but with no experience doing this, I wonder what shall happen.

Secondly, if the pin is placed below the midline it means the cg would be way below the midline under normal circumstances.  What exactly is the effect on the ball if you inverted the cg and pin and placed the cg above the pin - in a 6pm orientation for example.  I know of it being done on tour, but I can't find anything online as to what the effects may be.

Thanks a tonne!

Answer
Todd,

Not sure what you mean by standard layouts. The pictures in most ball boxes reflect layouts presuming a Positive Axis Point (PAP) of a player UNLIKE you. Your delivery (should) cause the driller to change the look of the layout on a drilled ball to reflect what might work well for your style, axis tilt, axis rotation and ball speed with regards to the lane and how it's oiled.

Do you drill your own stuff?

A pin below the mid-line would be a fairly aggressive pin position for the PAP you describe (but might cause flare that will hit every hole in the ball), a weight hole to eliminate excess static imbalances could potentially add 40 percent to your ball reaction. Does your driller watch you bowl? and have the info outlined above?

Flipping the core around would dramatically reposition the core. It sounds like you need a driller that better understands your style and needs. What high end balls do you own and are having issues with?

Let me know more info and I can begin to understand more of what is going or NOT going on. Thanks.
