Hello Jack, what gives when you polish your bowling ball? Well, the surface of the ball does not grab the lanes as much. This creates more skid. When a ball delays grabbing the lane until it gets well down the lane, it can use that stored energy, or "revolutions" to your advantage. It may allow the ball to travel that extra 6" to 1 foot further out of the oil before turning to the pocket if you have a short oil pattern. Imagine consistently doing this everytime without working very hard!
In my new book, True Bowler Adjustments, I talk about what we can do in the area of ball maintenance to "match up" to the lanes we bowl on.
If your bowling ball is not properly "prepared" for your lane conditions, your speed, and your release, then some nights on the lanes, it may as well be a door stop.
You have notice with no ball maintenance, it goes brooklyn one time, or it keeps straight down the lane, or looses the ability to hooking sufficiently to carry.  Progressively leaving buckets or worst yet, splits. This happens because of the heat units that are created when the ball contacts the lane and creates friction(high heat) on the back end of the lane. This heat, causes a melt down of the track area sometimes that can make a bowling ball perform less than expected after about 10 or 15 games depending on conditions.
Bowling balls have a tendency to arc or go angular to the pocket. They can smooth curve into the pocket, or go straight with a down and in path. Your bowling ball is taking one of those paths and it works for you with polish on your ball. In my new book, I teach you how and what to look for, when you read your ball reaction on the lanes.
In summary Jack, you have found the key to matching up on your lanes. Polish. Purchasing a ball spinner may help you to keep that particular surface on the ball that will help your skid down lane until the ball can grab the dry back end and move the way it needs to.
The match up between your speed, your release, the oil conditions, and your ball has to be made. Sounds like you are there Jack. If the house changes the oil pattern you may be lost for a minute until you find the correct surface for your bowling ball, however with a ball spinner, you can't go wrong. Everyone should have one. Especially, when they find success such as you have by polishing your ball. Many people bowl a lifetime and never find a helping key to their game. Perhaps you have. Best of luck!

P.S. Jack, many will tell you that you can try several other solutions to create more skid or getting a better reaction from your bowling ball. (i.e. different layouts, moving on the lane, changing the weight of the ball, putting it down early, etc., etc.) A ball spinner truly is just "one" of several adjustments I talk about in my book. Always keep an open mind so you can truly evaluate and enjoy all that bowling has to offer.
