RE: Turning the ball with my thumb

Question
The Bill Hall article is in a Bowling This Month magazine from May, 2002 (What your hand is telling you). Do you know Bill Hall? When I got my bowling ball refitted, it feels better now and we made the span longer from 4 5/16 to 4 7/16. I have a 1/8 reverse and 1/8 lateral pitch to the right for my thumb hole. I have a 0 and a 1/4 lateral to the right in my middle finger. The ring finger has 0 and 3/8 lateral to the left. I release the ball 45 degrees. I don't have a video of myself bowling. I have a little clip on a USBC Benefits video on youtube, but it's from a year ago. I'm the asian kid.

Answer
Sean,
The BTM cover story was "How to Read Your Hand". I will try to get a copy, unless you could scan it and send it to me at: [email protected]. I've meet Bill, a very talented and experienced coach. If I recall the info from the story it discussed overturning (spinning) the ball.

Your pitches seem appropriate for your span, unless the flexibility, length of your digits, or moistness or dryness of your hand is an issue.

It would be difficult to delivery a shot with 45 degrees axis rotation if you overturned the ball. But, axis rotation is not really the reflection of late turn of the shot, it's axis tilt. If you have a track that's small, it would reflect very late turn. Short fingers, moist/slick hands and/or a loose thumb hole might lead to gripping/late turn. Is any of the above an issue?

Thanks again.
