speed and revs

Question
I was wondering how can I produce more revs and more speed? I currently have and avg. speed of about 15mph but when the lanes break down I suffer even when I move in or out! my revs are maybe medium but I think i need more to cover more boards on the pba and sport shots. I have some success on them but i really struggle on shark and I notice all the high rev guys do well, whats your suggestions?

Answer

True Bowler Adjustment
Hello Quentin, I am not going to blow smoke at you! Changing speeds and rev rates, moving inside angles and all... very nice. However, like you said average speed, medium revs. What you are asking about is a "different" muscle movement.

From my heart you have to dedicate yourself to learning a new muscle movement. Whether it be your swing, steps and even moving your eyes to look up, instead of tilting your head back.

As a coach I need to rule out that its not you who is messing up and being inconsistent on the approach! So, when you give me 16mph, 16mph, 16mph, and you know what release you are using on a particular shot... Whoa momma!!!! Then I can say it's not you, it's the ball and the lane not talking to each other!

In my book True Bowler Adjustments, I fix the bowler first by making them consistent! Not making them robots, but giving a bowler a sense of consistency. Then in the next level, I tell the bowler, if it not you then you MUST LEARN TO ADJUST THE BOWLING BALL!!!

Quentin, you sound as if you may be a consistent bowler on the approach so the revs and the speed may not be as big an issue as it is to get the damned ball to react at the right moment for you and "your speed," "your revs."

To answer your question, get more under the ball and teach yourself to flip in forward quicker at release or teach yourself to spin quicker to the outside of the ball just before it gets to your ankle. In time you may notice a slight increase in your revs. Most bowlers generally won't vary much in my experience. Mainly because bowling is not as much about speed as it is about the ball reading the lanes at the most appropriate time. Which is the last 15 to 20 feet. That is today's game. Miss that window of opportunity and you are toast. Traction at the backend gives you action. The ball and the lane has to have good chemistry to make you proud of your shot.

In Summary Quentin, do you, if you feel you can up your pace, tempo, or cadence and be consistent at it, that will increase your speed. If you feel you can flip, or spin the ball through practice on your own and be consistent at doing it when your need to, push the edge of the envelope. My best advice as always, when I read about a bowler like you, one who knows what they can do. My job is to point the bowler in the direction of their next step, their next level ...  Which is...."Adjust the bowling ball" so we can see what it can really do. Because, I know its not you, based on your speed and release. I can count on "you" being consistent. Now, we need the ball and the lane to be consistent. Work that bowling ball, and then you will truly elevate your game by knowing your equipment. Learn to Adjust the ball also. Your eyes will love you for it...
