splits

Question
I seem to be getting alot of splits from large to small and I'm not sure what to do. I throw a straight ball, no hook.  I'll bowl good one game and then the next two won't be so hot.

Answer

True Bowler Adjustment
Hi Donnis, I love your question! To advance the bowler, your have to advance the bowler's game! no if ands and buts about it! You want to be if nothing else, more consistent. That means your bowling ball has to travel at or near the same direction every time when your deliver the ball. Especially the first ball, your strike ball. If you throw straight and the ball is always turning to the left, then it will always go left. Simply stated also, if the throw the ball straight and the ball is always turning to the right it will go to the right! No matter what I say from this point on, your goal is going to be to train yourself to curve the ball in the future so that it goes to the left or to the right opposite of whatever hand you are using.

Placing your hand behind the ball and throwing it straight is great for spare shooting. But not too good for consistent strikes and great pin count on the FIRST ball!  You gotta love how I put that and embrace it.

Since you can swing your ball straight it just need a little coaxing to turn to the left or right by bring your hand just a tad bit to the right for a right handed bowler. Or just a tad bit to the left for a left handed bowler. Instead of throwing from the 6 o'clock position(directly behind the ball) you will next be teaching yourself to get your hand in a position a little bit more to the right or left of the ball depending on which hand is your dominant hand. More to the right for right handed, more to the left for left handed.  It exciting to watch the change in a bowler advancing from a straight ball to a "curve" or hooking ball and that has been what I am talking about!  Its time to make it happen Donnis. You brought it up, now its time to take care of the problem. (smile) Try to get a certified coach to help you with your delivery so you can advance you and your game! Balls that roll straight get deflected wayyyy too much.
If you are throwing a backup ball, it can hurt your game even more if you may not know you are throwing a backup ball. So it takes a coach's eye on the lanes to give you good start out the gate. Again, I am very excited for you!!!  I won't lie, my book "True Bowler Adjustments" gives all the basics in the beginning of the book. But you will go back the the beginning many times over to re-learn so much of bowling if you start out with it! Take care!
