Coverage

Question
Coach,
I'm a freshman and our school just recently finished the season, since we're in off season, I was wondering about drills that I could do to enhance my coverage skills, speed, and agility.

I play DB and I don't cover very well, but I need to get better if I expect to play. I play free safety and my team runs a 3-3-5 primarily but we started running some 3-4 and 4-3 looks towards the end of our season. What should I practice for zone and man coverage so that I could move up to cornerback or strong safety?

Answer
I could give you a long-winded answer and go in depth, but I might as well link you to the video I get my DB drills from that I have put on YouTube.

Along with the drills in the video you NEED to get a jump rope and earn to use it.  I would say that jumping rope did more for me as a player than anything else.  As for lifting you need to concentrate on the core lifts (squat, deadlift and power clean).

Best of luck to you in the off-season and next season,
Coach Cziska
