Football inspiration

Question
Hey Jared, My son is 14 and in 8th grade. He is very athletic, playing basketball, baseball, and wrestling for many years as well as flag football for a couple years. He is 6'3 215 lbs with 4.6 40. He is "trying" 8th grade tackle football for the first time and just told me after one week of conditioning that it is too hard and not for him. My question is how to inspire him to play football (College scholarship?) and also to let his mom know he has a good chance at a scholarship for college? She thinks a football scholarship is one in a million, any recommendations?

Answer
It sounds to me from his description he is the perfect build to play football.  Tell your son that every player in America right now is complaining about how much they have to run, and how sore their body is.  My team every day says that they can't breath with the equipment on.  It just takes alot of guts, and determination to get through the first few weeks.  Tell him after the first few weeks his body will start to adjust to the helmet, pads and running.  Also if he stays in football he will be in great shape for all of his other sports.  He will also develop the mental toughness it takes to be a great athlete.  Also tell your son that there is no better sport to play than football.  He will have more fun on that field during his game than he will ever have playing basketball, baseball or wrestling.  Tell him to at least finish the season and then see how he feels about the game of football.
As for his mother, a kid that is 6'3 215 in the 8th grade that can run, has a great chance of getting a college scholarship.  If he plays ever year until he graduates.  Most college teams have around 90 players on scholarship.  Far more than any other sport.  Baseball only has around 12 players, and basketball only has around 12 players that are on scholarship.  So tell him to hang in their work hard at the game.  And maybe in a few years he will save you a lot of money and get a college scholarship.  GOOD LUCK COACH NOEL!
