Free safety position

Question
Hey I played safety in a 3-5-3 system last year and did a fairly good job by leading my team in tackles but now im going to have to defend the pass more. I know I have the range to get around the field but I am just wondering if you could tell me the progressions I have to take when playing this position from the run to the pass.

Answer
Hello Steven,

The secondary is always pass first. At the free safety position, it applies even more. Of course, it's the usual he does not allow any receiver to get deeper than him.  The free safety does not commit until the ball is being thrown. Quarterback drops back, free safety back pedals, head on a swivel looking for crossing routes and anyone going deep. You do not commit to the run until the ball has crossed the line of scrimmage. You must always be aware of what the strong safety is doing.  other than that, it really doesn't change that much.
