Defending the Double Wing

Question
Need help!  I'm getting ready to face a team that pounds the double wing.  They throw the ball none because they are so successful with their D wing. They have a good line, and I don't have a great D-line. My L backers are good and my D Backs are good as well.  Is there a D that I can run that utilize my speed and not strength.

Answer
Dear Rich,
I have to tell you that it does not look good for your team. I have bad news for you and I have good news for you.

The bad news is, that teams that run the double wing offense are usually good running teams.

The good news is, that they don't like to pass. If you can score on them, early and often in the game, you can force them out of their regular offense. And if you can score on them late in the game, your opponent will usually fall apart because their offense is not geared to score quickly.

A defense that more and more teams are using is the 3-5-3 defense.

The 3-5-3 defense is a high pressure aggressive defense. It limits the number of receivers an offense can put into a pass pattern and safely protect its quarterback. This is done by faking a total blitz on almost every play. This tactic, forces the offense to keep the tight end and the running backs in to block.

When the defense reads run, they come with the total blitz to stop the run. When the defense reads pass, they rush anywhere from 3 to 5 men.

The 3-5-3 also drops defensive linemen into coverage therefore, the offense never knows who will be rushing and who will not be. However, if you only have a week or so to get ready for this team, the 3-5-3 defense is not going to help you. It takes time to put into place. You might give it a try, sometimes a surprise defense is all you need.
Your friend, Coach Louis.
