Quickness

Question
Jeremy
I learned to skate and began playing rec. hockey in my mid 40's-I am 51 now.
I have improved a lot and have the basics down, but one part of my game that needs improvement is quickness and agility.
I understand that reflexes and agility will slow as you age, but I think a large part of my problem is my weight.
Before I got into hockey I was a competitive bodybuilder, and I carry almost 250 pounds on a smaller 5'8" body.I have huge thighs and can get going fat but am slow on turning, etc.
I am naturally heavy so I doubt if I can lose weight though I am trying to take a few pounds of fat of.
I wonder if there is and kind of agility/quickness training I could incorporate into my cardio workout? The kind of stuff that would get me moving quicker from a stationary position.
Thanks!
Thanks for any suggestions.

Answer
Yes there is a lot you can do as far as workouts go. If you still workout and you are still doing your body building style workouts it will actually work against your hockey skills. When you workout you can either train and build slow twitch muscles, or fast twitch. In hockey you want to train and build fast twitch because you want explosive power and speed. When you work out to get better at hockey you should only be doing hockey specific workouts. I learned all this in high school by reading a book called complete conditioning for ice hockey. There is a newer version of the book and it comes with a DVD. The book is really good and also talks about nutrition, as a hockey player it is probably the most informative book I have read (good thing they make you read books in high school!).
