Im starting to play hockey at the age of twenty; what are the chances of ever playing in the minor leagues?

Question
I have always wanted to play hockey, but up until this year my life has been overtaken by football.  I played the sport for as far back as I can remember, and my high school team made 3 state championship appearances in the 4 years I was there, placing many players on major Div. 1 teams.  Anyway, I am 20, and a sophomore in college, and have just started playing hockey.  I am in an adult rec. league and can't get enough.  I have a strong passion for athletics and have begun to do some research on minor league hockey.  Obviously I am not yet where I need to be skill wise, and I do plan on graduating before I undertake this feat, but ultimately I think it would be great to play in the minor leagues for a couple of years after college.
Please be honest, just how good of a chance do I have making a minor league team after only playing for a few years in an adult rec league, and what are some things I can do to better my chances.  I have no aspirations to make it to the NHL, and do eventually plan on attending grad school but before then minor league hockey is something I really want to do.

Thanks,

Thomas

Answer
Hi Thomas...

I am never one to say that something is IMPOSSIBLE...  If you REALLY REALLY REALLY want - I believe there is always "a" way!

Some may say that your odds may be very slim  -  HOWEVER, in my opinion, THEY ARE CERTAINLY NOT IMPOSSIBLE.  Every now and then the lower minor teams will hold open tryouts and if you have the skills and the heart - you just NEVER know!

The first thing you need to do is get play as many games as you possibly can - and hopefully get some feedback - guidance - coaching - on your play.   Try to get on the best men's team you can and see if you can play in the highest end (most competitive) tournaments.  If you "take over" the whole show...  things will be looking good.

You need to get as many games in and build a reputation through playing and getting some history of stats and possibly scouting.

Once you "get in the system" you will then be able to climb the ranks to show your skills.

Here is a link you can explore - they sometimes hold open tryouts or tournaments.

Another very important aspect is for you to ENJOY the whole process.  If you can enjoy all the workouts, the practice times, self improvement, disciplined diet and lifestyle - you not only improve your chance of success - but you also become successful and a WINNER NOW!  For the true definition of success in being content/satisfied/fulfilled "now" in the moment...
and the more of that you have - the more of it you will experience - and the easier that makes it to achieve your goals!!

Make sense?

Feel free to follow up with any other questions.

Good luck,

Martial
