Hockey and cardio (bike)

Question
Hi, i read some of your answers, u impress me, and i would appreciate if you answer mine :) .

Im a midget BB 17 years old player. This summer, i need to work on 1 big thing, my cardio. I have a stationnary bike. Now, what should i do on it? Should i go on it for 45-50 minutes, 3 times week? I also heard of ''short sprints'', how frequently should i do these sprints?

so basically, i wanna know how long i have to be on the bike for, and when should i do these short sprints.

I really appreciate it, thanx alot for taking the time to help me out, i am so motivated for next year ;) If possible, can you send your answer to my e-mail address?

Thanx alot!!

Answer
Hi Marc...

Putting a weight or specific training program together is not exactly something that I do in particular.   There are great programs available from various hockey trainers and training facilities around the country.

One in particular is Frappier's Acceleration Program which combines plyometrics with strength and conditioning.   You can google these and you will find tons of info!  This is very good for becoming explosive and unpredictable on the ice.

i.e. http://www.frappieracceleration.com/

Or you can try sites like this one:  http://www.sportspecific.com/members/login.cfm?hpage=department18.cfm

That said - you can't go wrong with riding bike...  you can train for both stamina with long rides and for speed/power with short high speed sprints.   BOTH are necessary and both are good for ya!!!

Remember this: one major ingredient you MUST have to succeed in ANY program Marc is that you ENJOY it!  If you aren't having fun - or feeling stressed - it will not work for you!  So find something you like and then give it all you got!

If you need anything else feel free to follow up!

Good luck with the puck,

Martial
