double minor penalty

2016/7/16 9:37:46

Question
2 part question..If a player incurs a double minor penalty and the opposing team scores a power play goal does that player come out of the box?  If he does not come out of the box and the opposing team scores another goal does it count as 2 power play goals in the stats for the game?

Answer
Good Morning James,

First off want to apologize in the delay of answering. I was on the road for some games over the weekend and just got back late last night.

To answer the first part, it depends on how much time is left on the penalty. The player will have a 4:00 penalty as a double minor. If the opposing team scores before the first 2 minutes are up, then the time is reset to 2:00 and the player stays in the box and the opposing team will still have a power play. If there is less then 2:00 on the penalty, then the player will come out of the box and its back to 5 on 5.

For your 2nd part, yes it will count as 2 powerplay goals, but it will also count as 2 powerplay opportunities. So the opposing team would go 2 for 2 on the powerplay in that situation.

Hope this answers your question!

Thanks!

Guy
