Question
Hi, my question is, for a 10 year old boy, to keep him playing at a decent caliber of hockey, should scrimmaging with others that are older be beneficial for him, as extra ice time, or should one focus more on skills for him?  at this age there is so much competition already.

Answer
Hello Tracey!

Great question!

Actually if your son is having FUN and is not getting "beat" too much during those scrimmages - that can be the best way to enjoy the game AND improve his skills at the same time!

Back in "my" day - the kids used to play street hockey 4-5 times a week.   It was fun.  It was invigorating.  And boy did we get good a puck handling!!

There is indeed too much structure and too much competition now...  FUN should be the key...  so follow the FUN!

Good Luck!
