When is good time to begin hockey?

Question
I've heard most of the hockey players start skating when they are four or younger.  My son will turn 11 soon and he just started hockey this spring season. He had so much fun in playing hockey and wants to continue. He played soccer since he was four and he played select soccer. He wants to do both but I would like him to choose hockey or soccer this season (He also does tennis and golf) I want him to stop soccer for one season and focus on hockey to see where his heart belongs taking private lessons and camps. I am nervous though. Skating is not part of our way of lives down in Texas and I am wondering if he can ever catch up with other players who had early start. I personally never seen a competitive soccer player who started when they are 11 even though running is nature of human being.  Skating is definitely not part of human nature and I would think early start is more important than for soccer.  What are your experiences with your players who start this late? Thanks for your reply in advance!

Answer
Hello Hyejin...

I am a firm believer that it is never too late to start playing hockey.  If there is love of the game and you are having FUN - you are already a winner.  If you love to practice, work out, adhere to disciplined diet and lifestyle - then you are probably in the top 10% of people and can become highly skilled quite fast!

So anything is possible if your son REALLY wants it!

BIG KEY #1 - he and you must have FUN!

Follow the heart and you will always be a winner.

GOOD LUCK
