to small?

Question
hi there, my name is Dean Naude and i am origanly from cape town south africa, but now live in auckland new zealand. ive always been playing rugby and mostly play at scrum half(half back) wing or fly half(1st five). i tried out for the schools first XV team as a half back but i did not make the 24 player squad for being too small.. i weigh 54kgs and stand at 164cm tall.. but i am fast and agile and can break lines really well. my coach said its for my own safety that i dont play the open grade because, once again, im said to be too small.. i personally think that as a half back you meant to be small and fast which is my best ability.
please can you help me with some advice.
thanks!!

Answer
Hi Dean, Do you really want to play rugby? if you do, then you need to out play the other boys who are trying to get your position. During training you will need to be very aggressive and out train the others, that is the only way you can play your way into the team. If your coach thinks your to small then prove him wrong, ask him for another trail or a chance to play. Most coaches will give you a shot. If that doesn't work consider playing in a club team, and go to an appropriate grade and again out play the others, don't be put off by your hight......all you need to do is to look back over past All Blacks and springbok players to see that size wasn't a factor.

Being short doesn't really mean that much to me as a coach, I remember an old coach saying to me "I'd rather have a small good player then a big useless player" its all in the attitude. If your annoyed at the comments from your coach, tell him! or prove it to him, show him why you should be selected.

Its never the size of the player that makes the difference its always the size of the heart.
