Starting rugby (England, UK)

Question
Nick

I am going to university in September (in England) and am very interested in giving rugby a go.

The only problem is i havent played for years and im not that naturally talented at it and would just like some advice really.

Im nearly 21,   5'11" tall and weigh about 165lbs. So im not that heavy but i am working out, trying to put on more weight etc.
I assume that i would play a back role, although i dont have a clue which one to be honest. My ball handling is pretty good but im not especially quick at running.

Any advice on getting fit, being ready to play etc would be appreciated!

Answer
Congratulations on "Uni" in England. With the world cup in France this year it will be fun.

Honestly your question is really general but the best thing to start with is fitness. I have played in the UKM and to say the average level of fitness is below world standards is an understatement. The UK team has been referred to as "Fatties" as recently as last week by ex-All Black captain living in London Sean Fitzpatrick.

Get fit , really fit.  Hit the gym with a train and be specific with the need for strength, sped and endurance. Do not worry about putting on or loosing weight. It is too late to pack on 20lbs in muscle now so work on getting the muscle you do have into strength and speed mode.

Make cardio high intensity - intervals etc work well.

Watch as much modern rugby as possible on TV  or attend a local club (a good  one)

Hit the books and DVD - Amazon.com and rugby outfitting sites are a good start.

Study the rules

I suggest center as a good start or 1st 5/8. The position you end up in will come from play time. You could end up at hooker.

With honed ball skills and speed you can slot in most positions. I suggest watching some rugby, pick a position that looks good to you.
