More advanced moves?

Question
Hey Nick.
I don't know if you remember me, but i asked a few questions about flanker play a while back. I've now secured a place as a flanker in my team, and it's now became the most competitive position. My Coach places me there reluctantly as he does not want me there, but i perform well. So thanks for the past advice!

The reason why i'm going to bother you again (Which i know i shouldn't do, as your a prop and you'll bash my head in) is because my team are now entering the Semi Final of the county cup.

Are there any brilliant pack specific moves that you can tell me, so I can help give us some more moves to use? That would be brilliant as our play at the moment focuses on pick and drives, as well as blanketing any opposition at the breakdown and clearing them out. Also, what can you tell me about the role of the Pack Leader? I've been promoted to it. My team hears my voice alot, often in the scrum and general encouragement, but what else can I do?

Thanks,
Yours sincerely,
Chris

Answer
Hi Chris,

I suggest working with your half back about moves off the break down. The pick and drive is a strong and simple strategy. If it has got your team this far keep with the tried and true and don't get into over complicating things.

Still your half back and you as well as the coach might be able to come up with a few extra plays that fit your teams style specifically.

It is good that your team hears your voice. As a pack leader be the one to have the vision is the game. On top encouragement make sure to look for openings in the opposition; their strengths and weaknesses. During the game direct your team towards th opposition weaknesses. If they are coming up quick on defense tell your kickers to chip over and get your runners involved. If the opposition is putting up a good fanned out defense and the pick and drive isn't breaking through muster up and old fashion maul and drive hard with a full pack of 8 players. This will force the opposition to commit players to defend the maul and open up the back line defense. Once the opposition is all sucked into the maul have the ball moved out to the backs for a play.

The big thing is to keep communication up.

Keep up the encouragement never a negative word, if a team mate stuffs up just help him up and tell him to hit the next play hard.

Lead by example.

Good luck and congratulations on your success.
