Scoring dropped fly with baserunners advance

Question
Runners on 2nd and 3rd base. None out. Batter hits deep line drive between RF and CF. RF runs to and gloves ball over head on the run  but drops it. Both runners score. Batter ends up on 2nd base.

Batter gets 1 RBI (?) since 3rd base runner would probably score after tagging up. Does batter get charged AB? (since if it was caught it would have been a SF and so no AB charged?)

Answer
Jim,

The batter gets a SAC and an RBI(2) for their plate appearance if an error occurs.  The batter did their job, a fly ball to the outfield to score the run.  The batter is not penalized with an at-bat reaching base on a error just because the defense screwed up.

Based on your description, the outfielder did everything they could to make a play and could not.  Was this an error?  Probably not.  I would score this a double if absent the runners the batter would have made it to second base.  If a throw to home allowed the runner to advance, then a single.  Batter gets 2 RBI's as well.
