Understanding AB vs. SAC Rules in Baseball - Correct Scoring Analysis

Question
R1 is at 1b...b1 attempts bunt to 3b, 3b overthrows 1b and r1 advances to 3b and b1 ends up at 2b.

Scorekeeper rule an error on 3b...did not give b1 an AB as it was ruled a SAC...is this correct??

My thought is that it should be ruled an AB since no SAC was completed

Answer
Hi Dusty

This was scored correctly.  Actually the SAC was completed.  R1 advanced to 2nd due to the bunt.

If B2 (not B1) lays down the bunt and R1 is not thrown out at 2nd you have a successful sacrifice, no at bat charged.  The scorekeeper also ruled correctly on the error.  You can have a sacrifice with the batter being safe due to an error.

I hope this helps .

Tom
