Base Running Rules: Is a Runner Out if Hit by a Deflected Ball?
Question
Base runner at second base. Batter hits the ball the pitcher makes an attempt to catch the ball, the ball strikes his glove but ricochets toward second base. The runner that was on second base is attempting to go to third when the ball strikes the runner. Is the runner out?
Answer
Hi Rich,
nice to talk w/ you again.
A runner would not be out if they are hit by a batted ball that is deflected by any fielder if they could not avoid contact with the ball.
In other words the runner would have to allow themselves to be intentionally hit by the ball to be out.
