Softball Foul Ball Rule: Understanding Line Drives Over Bases

Question
Hi Mr. Ambrose

My question is when a line drive is hit and the ball goes over third base or first base and lands in foul territory is the ball actually foul. Does the ball have to land in fair territory over third base or first base for it to be fair. The play is question was a batter hit a line drive which went over third base but the actual ball landed in foul territory and no one touched the ball. is the ball foul?

Thanks
Scott

Answer
Hi Scott,

A batted fly ball past 1st or 3rd is fair or foul depending on where the ball is when 1st touched or lands.

Where is flies over is not important.  Lands or is touched in fair territory..fair ball....foul territory..... foul ball
