error

Question
Is it an error if a fielder drops an easy pop fly that they are camped under even though the batter goes on to make an out anywhere? The rule book says an error is any play that is not made that prolongs an at bat but doesn't specify fair or foul so I assume that it doesn't matter. Also, how about a high pop behind the play that the catcher never completely gets under and it goes off her glove? Thanks

Answer
To the first part of your question, absolutely.

You are correct about the rule book not stating fair or foul.  There is no difference.  In reality there is no such thing as a caught foul ball.  The ball is not foul if caught and also is not foul until it is touched on or over foul terriory.

If the the ball should have been caught with ordinary effort, error.  Otherwise no error.  Give the benefit of the doubt to the batter.
