Live Ball Rule: Coach Hit by Overthrown Ball - ASA Fastpitch Explanation
Question
Hi. A live overthrown ball from SS to 3rd hits basecoach in coach's box. Coach tried to avoid. Is ball live or dead?
Please tell me ASA fast (or slow pitch) chapter and verse thats clarifies this question. Is it a "blocked ball" if that is what it could be or just live? You are the best and thanks again.
Answer
Hi Kevin,
Anywhere in LBT not necessarily only in the coaches box with a thrown or batted ball basically the coach is part of the playing field. Unless the coach intentionally interferes with the ball, it is nothing, live ball, we play on.
ASA 8.7 The Runner Is Out......
0. When a coach intentionally interferes with a batted or thrown ball, or interferes with the defensive team's opportunity to make a play on another runner. A batted or thrown ball that unintentionally hits a base coach is not considered interference.
