question - runner interference (situation based)

Question
Hi,
Here is what occured. Runner on third - two outs - (10U) pop fly (FOUL BALL) hit down third base area - but foul. Runner just runs (becauase they are 10 and dont know any better) - and kind of runs into the third baseman. However - I personally dont think it was a "playable" ball - but the umpire - called the runner out AND the batter. I have never seen this before - so there were FOUR outs in the inning. He said it was "in the rule book" - and mind you - I have coached HS fastpitch for seven years and have never seen this before. Firstly - if its not a playable ball - I was under the impression there would be no call period - but if his judgement said the defensive player could have made the play - the runner should have been out. But the batter??? What is the correct ruling on this?

Answer
Hi Trisha,

You haven't seen it in Fed play because the rules are a little different.

I'm not going to get into "playable" here because I didn't see it

In ASA if you interfere with a routine fly ball in foul territory both the runner and the batter are out

in fed play it is the runner is out and a foul ball on the batter.
