Umpire Interference in Fastpitch: A Rule Explanation

Question
last night at our game, the umpire called interference on HERSELF, and only after she heard the coach on the other team say" wow, ump interference, she needs to get out of the way".  Is there such a rule? I have never heard an umpire call interference on themself. thanks for your help

Answer
Hi Penny,

You don't tell me what happened but umpire interference is pretty rare.

If a fair untouched batted ball hits an umpire before it passes an infielder exc F1 the ball is dead and the b-r is awarded 1st base.

If an umpire interferes w/ a catcher's attempt to put out a runner stealing or attempted pick off and the runner is not put out the runners are returned to the base they occupied at the time of the pitch.

That's the 2 cases where we can have UI
