look back rule with runner on third

Question
I recently had a scenario where I had a runner on third and the batter walked. Before the batter reached first, I had the runner on third off base as we were going to use the continuous walk. The ball was back to the circle before my runner reached first. It is my understanding that once the batter reaches first my runner on third must make their decision whether she is going home or staying at third and cannot be off the base until the runner reaches second or a play is made on her. Is this correct or can she remain off base until the end of that batters at bat? She was called out prior to the batter reaching first base. However, when questioned, the call was reversed. Secondly, the pitcher was not going to make a play on my runner advancing to second until the last minute which held my runner on third. Once she makes a play, my runner on third may advance. Is this correct?

Answer
Hi Troy

You understand the rule pretty well.

In ASA play the LBR goes into effect for all runners when the ball is live, the pitcher has control of the ball in the circle AND the b-r touches 1st base.  Each runner now has their own responsibilities under the rule.

R1 cannot be off base just hanging around while the b-r is doing her thing.  R1 if off base and stationary must immediately advance or retreat when the LBR goes into effect.  If she returns to 3rd base she must stay there.

Once the pitcher makes a play on any runner or no longer has possession of the ball in the circle the LBR is no longer in effect and R1 could attempt to advance.
