umpire dialog with players

Question
What type of dialog should umpires have with players? We participate in a church league that have mens and co-ed teams. We have an umpire telling batters that they should swing at balls pitched, even though it is out of the strike zone, and telling pithers that he will call a game if the pitcher pitches too many balls. I also witness this umpire making fun of a catcher that missed a few balls pitched. This is not a competitive league, just groups wanting to participate in organized sports. I'm not an umpire, but I realize that calls made are subjective. Isn't there some type of standard of ethics that would prohibite umpires from provoking players?

Answer
Mark,
Good umpires should never be seen or heard outside of doing their job. Sure it's fine to be personable and chat with players and coaches but no more. Your teams are paying his checks so you do have some control over who you hire, find out who cuts the checks and have them find another ump. Good luck, Coach Suthe.
