Umpire Position

Question
I noticed in a fastpitch game that I recently watched that the umpire had a difficult time getting comfortable behind the plate because the cather kept moving from side to side to work the corners of the plate. What should have been the correct position of the umpire so he could see the entire plate?

Answer
I set up with my right foot centered on the plate as close as I can to the catcher while still allowing them room to move and play their position.  I use a fairly wide stance with my left foot heel approximately in-line with my right toe.  This allows me to view the plate from between the batter and the catcher.  I crouch down to the point where my eyes are at the top of the strike zone.

I will make small adjustments to where the catcher plays to insure that I can see the whole plate.  Most catchers know that they need to let the umpire have this position to see the plate.
