Pitchers need a catcher

Question
QUESTION: Are their official guidelines for High School softball tryouts?  Can a pitcher be asked to demonstrate their pitching ability without a catcher while everyone else trying out for pitcher has a catcher?  In addition can varsity players pitch on junior varsity all year.

ANSWER: Anne,
Most High School Coaches put together a point system for tryouts, the girls with the highest points at the end generally win a spot.
To be very effective, a pitcher needs a catcher in order to show her talents, I don't understand her pitching without a catcher. You might have to enlighten me more about the situation.
Generally, Varsity players do not play on Junior Varsity, I have seen situations where no JV pitcher was available and a V pitcher was used. In these cases the V pitcher was instructed to "Let" them hit. JV games are solely for letting players with lesser ability get into a game to show improvement and to get a "Look" at from the coach.
At my school we don't even count wins and lose's in JV and go 3 runs or 3 outs. Thanks for your question, I hope I have been of some help, If I can help in the future please let me know.
Coach Suthe.

QUESTION: When your child plays softball well, but isn't given an equal chance to prove it at the high school level does she have any chance in college.  Last summer she went to a college softball camp and felt very good about the way she performed.  This high school seems like the team is picked before the kids ever arrive at school.  Is there anyway to fight the system

Answer
Anne,It is difficult for a girl to go to College if she does not do well in High School. If she does not get enough play time, keep getting her into College Camps, if she is truly a solid player she will get noticed.
As far as fighting the system goes, I don't know what to tell you, but I can tell you this. Encourage your child to work and practice as hard as she can, have a good attitude and be will to play with a willing spirit no matter where her coach plays her, even if it is the bench for the time being.
Good Luck,
Coach Suthe.
