Infield fly ASA U-14 Slowpitch

Here is what happened.  R1 is at 2nd and R2 is at 1st, there is 1 out.  Br hits a pop fly to the infield and the umpire calls "Infield fly batter out".  The first baseman backs up to catch the ball and manages to miss the catch the ball drops in the grass maybe 1-3ft into the outfield in fair territory right behind the 1st baseman.  Everyone advances br is at 1st base, the umpire says " I am nullifying the Infield fly call" batter is safe.

Can an umpire call "Infield Fly batter out" then nullify the call after the ball drops and hits the ground?

Hi Jon,

When the umpire called IF their judgement was that the ball could be caught with ordinary effort by an infielder, and the batter was out.  If the ball takes that infielder to the grass area or not doesn't matter.

I think it's very unfair to the defense to "nullify" his call, he already called the batter out.  An IF does not have to be caught to be an out if that's what he was thinking, and again just because it's takes an infielder to the grass is not relevant.
