Stepping into the box

Question
When my turn at bat comes up and I step into the batters box, how much time is normally allowed to set up.  My example:  "I stepped into the box (I'm a righty) with my back hand up (right) asking for time to set up"  The pitcher pitched and a strike was called.  I know the game needs to go quick, but come on, let me make eye contact with the pitcher.
What should I do

Answer
Hello Kyle,

You need to request time from the ump before getting fully into the batter's box.  He will raise his hand to the pitcher acknowledging that time has been granted.  Until the ump signals time, don't enter the box.  As long as you aren't taking an abnormally long amount of time to get your feet set, he should reward your request for time.  If not, you Coach needs to discuss the issue with the ump.

Coach Mike
