Ball presentation

Question
Both my daughters (who pitch) have been instructed to "present" the ball prior to placing it in to the glove before starting the wind up. Is it a rule--does the batter have to see the ball" Also, if a pitcher puts her fingers to her mouth  then grips the ball without wiping the saliva from her fingertips, it it illegal? Thanks.

Answer
Hello Curt,

No, it is not required.  The rules only state that she must have her hands separated with the ball either in the glove or throwing hand while taking the signal ( or simulating taking a signal) from the catcher.  Afterwards, the hands must then be brought together in front of the body for at least one second and no more than 10 seconds when starting the delivery.

Yes, it would be illegal to put the fingers in the mouth then grip the ball.  Application of any moisture or foreign material is prohibited.  I hope this was helpful, and please let me know if you have any other questions.

Coach Mike
