Coach's Authority to Call Time for Runners: IHSAA Rules Explained

Question
I had a runner advance to third she did not need to slide because the play was not really close. She had her foot on the side of the bag for what seemed at least 6-10 seconds, and the girl held the tag on her for that long.So becoming bored with the situation I called time. The runner then dusted herself off and he called her out and said a coach can not be granted time only a player can.He said it was an IHSAA rule.I have never seen a game that the coach cant call time for a runner after the play has been over for so long. Please tell me what your ruling would have beebn

Answer
Steve,

I am not sure if this rule exist. I always grant time when requested by a coach in that situation. She would have been safe if I was in charge of the game. But since I wasn't, the ruling that umpire made may be correct. Then again, it may be bogus. To avoid this just have your runner call time and then there won't be any issues.

Hope this helps.

Jesse
