Question
Hi Mark,I can't seem to find this, but beleive I have seen it before. This is a 2 part question. We have a player R1 on 1st base with less than 2 outs. B1 hits ball to the first baseman who runs over to first base to tag the bag. B1 is out. R1 never leaves the bag and was not was not ever tagged. Whats the call?

Part 2: Batter hits ball to first baseman, R1 left base on the pitchers release and comes back to first base and stands there while 1st baseman tags bag for the second out? Is this running bases backwards since she left the bag on the pitch? Shoudld R1 be out in bothh situations?

Either call in my opinion, the runner has to leave the bag when the ball is hit since B1 becomes a base runner 2 and is intitled to the bag at first.. Can you clear this one up.

Thanks, Chuck.

Answer
Hi Chuck,

part 1, by f3 touching the bag 1st the force is removed and r1 is safe on the bag

part 2 is basically the same because the force is removed, she is not running the bases backward in that sense of the rule

in both cases r1 is no longer legally entited to the base and can be put out by rule by simply being tagged on the base, there is no rule they have to leave the base physically.  When the force is removed they are again legally entited to the bag.  You have to tag the runner 1st if you want 2 outs.

Mark
