Trail runner surpassing lead runner

Question
This happen in about my second year of umpiring. Never had a definite answer.
Book says that a runner has to physically pass the runner in front of him or her.

Situation: Coed lower league slow pitch. ASA rules. No outs R1 at second base. (male)
R2 at first base (female) B1 hits ball to F8 and is caught shoe string level. R1 turned to face outfield keeping foot on 2nd base. Never moving it. R2 did not tag up and continued to run to second base. Ran past second and into center field in a straight line from 1st to 2nd about 5 steps past second base. Again R2 never took foot off 2nd base. I called R2 out for passing R2. Sold it without question from either team. Later talking with other umpires half said I was correct other have said that the runner hat to physically pass the lead runner. Question? When is a runner going to the next base? With R2 at ground 0 on second, is any step past second a continuation of the runner to the next base? Was R1 5 steps closer to third than R2?

This is a HTBT (Had to be there) question.  This is why we get paid the big bucks, to pass judgement in these situations.  I think I would try to judge what the runner did.

If she was trying for third, out.  If she was just running past second before returning to first, nothing.
