Softball Rule Question: Fly Ball Over Fence - Was It a Home Run?
Question
I have a question. I participate in slow pitch softball. Today, I hit a long fly ball that hit the yellow topping of the fence, popped straight up in the air, and then outfielder jumped up and caught the ball on the way down over the fence. At first they called me out, then they called it a homerun. What should have been called?
Answer
Hi Christi,
Well, you should never be called out on this as it is not a legal catch (it hit the fence) nor it is a home run as it never touched the ground (or something else, such as the foul pole) out of the field of play.
It is simply a live ball (and a nice play by the outfielder) and you should be running the bases.
