Extra Hitters

Question
My team is playing in a coed tournament that allows extra hitters.  However, they only use one male extra hitter (no female).  I told them that if they used a male extra hitter, they also had to use a female extra hitter.  They said that ASA rules allow for only one extra hitter and that it can be a male as long as he bats eleventh in the order.  Is this true according to ASA rules?

Answer
Hi again Travis,

Thank you for your kind comments.  Since you're going to print this out, tell the TD I was assigned this year as UIC of the MASA co-ed A and co-ed B state championship tournaments.  I just finished the B 2 weeks ago.  My answer is ASA correct!

Hi Travis,

Under ASA rules...
No it's not!  In coed you can bat (starting the game) 10 or 12, not 11.  If you bat 12 you have 2 eps.  If you start w/ 10 you cannot add the eps later.

The only way you could bat 11 is under the shorthanded rule, you started w/ 12, 1 then gets injured, have no subs, and you bat 11 taking an out for the shorthanded player's batting position.
