Double Base at First Base: Safety & Rule Recommendations for Youth Softball
Question
Hi-
I'm trying to convince our youth girls softball organization about the safety merits of using a double base at first, but they've never heard of it being used in youth leagues and are hesitant. Nearly all the adult leagues in my city, Columbus, OH, use them and it's great. Is there any rule or recommendation that I can show them to help my cause and perhaps prevent a child from being injured from a first base collision? Thanks for your reply. Karen
Answer
Hi Karen,
ASA has gone to a double base at all levels of play because of safety.
I really don't understand their hesitation, it's just common sense. You have less collisions, less stepping on the 1st baseman's leg, etc.
You might want to contact Craig, he might know of some studies.
