Thank you for your quick answer. May I bother you with another question?
I was on first base, and the batter hit a ball down the left field line. The left fielder went over to field it, and accidently kicked the ball out of play when I was a couple steps away from 3rd base. I would have easily scored, but the umpires put me back at 3rd base, saying I only get one base in that situation.
Later, another batter hit a ball off the 3rd baseman's shoulder. The ball rolled into short left field and again went out of play. The batter was given a double. At that time, I asked (still thinking about the previous play, of course)what would happen if the following batter did the same thing. The umpire told me that the batter would get a double, and the runner on 2nd would be placed at 3rd.
Is this correct? If that's the rule, OK, I guess, but it doesn't seem to make sense. Why does the batter get 2 bases (he wasn't down to 1st when the ball rolled out of play) while the runner gets just one. I'm a logical kind of guy, and I love the simple logic that governs baseball/softball rules, but I fail to see the logic here. If the batter gets a double, shouldn't all runners get 2 bases, also? Could you please explain?

Question -
our umpires stopped a game due to rain in the top of the 3rd. visiting team was leading 6-0, still batting. my understanding is that we resume the game at a later date, exactly at the point at which it was stopped. naturally, the home team is claiming the entire game should be re-started. the visiting team wants to resume in the 3rd. i am league president, and i need to know if my interpretation is correct. i believe, as i said, we pick up in the 3rd.

You are correct, you start at exactly the point the game was stopped, down to the batter, the count, the outs and the runners.

Just an extra, a person on the team roster is allowed to play at the resumed game.  They need not be at the the 1st game to be a legal sub.  So (IE) if the batter can't be there a team member who was not at the 1st game can be substituted for that batter with the 2-1 count with runners on 1st and 3rd (or whatever it was) at the time the game was delayed.

Please feel free to ask me any questions you have, as league president equipped with the rules you make the league better for everyone.

#1 by rule 8-5-h all runners are awarded 2 bases from the time of the pitch.  So that is the correct call, 1st to 3rd.  I don't know what they mean by 1 base.  It is not an award from the last base touched BUT from the base at the time of the pitch.  BTW the key here is accidently, if it were in the judgement of the umpire on purpose it is 2 bases FROM the last base touched.  That's rule 8-5-j

#2 This is the same rule, all runners are awarded 2 bases from their base at time of the pitch.  So a runner on 2nd would be awarded home not 3rd.  They are incorrect on that call and it is protestable as a mis-application of the playing rules.
