Question
Hi Mark,

Question..runner at 2nd..batter hits a grounder to 2nd base, runner on 2nd stays, overthrown to 1st base..runner on 2nd then goes toward third, changes her mind and runs back towards 2nd..the hitter is on second base..3rd baseman touches base and runner...ball thrown to 2nd baseman who touches the base, but doesn't tag...the girl then goes back to first to avoid the tag out at 2nd.  Can a runner go back to first after touching 2nd base?  What's the call?

Thanks for your help!!!

Answer
Hi Michelle,

I can only give you ASA rules.

If the runner going from 2nd-3rd was tagged before they reached the base they are out.  (I'm not clear on where they were).  If they were on 3rd base they are safe.

The other runner can return to 1st if they choose.

I can see no force out here so touching the bag only doesn't do anything for an out.
